UC#4Automated multimodal terminal operations

This use case focuses on developing trustworthy integration and optimization of business decisions across all systems involved in the transition from partial automation to full autonomy. It includes conducting a literature review, defining requirements, and designing and implementing a reference methodology for automated multimodal terminal operations. It also applies model-based techniques and tools to support reliable system integration in next-generation logistics terminals.

The AWTrain enters the terminal. Each wagon can detach and move to the designated yard block.
BENEFITS

  • Enhanced Throughput and Efficiency
  • Cost Savings on Labor and Maintenance
  • Improved Safety and Reliability
  • Sustainability Gains

The Automated Multimodal Terminal Operation with Autonomous Wagon System (AWT) transforms intermodal container terminals by deploying detachable, self-navigating train wagons for efficient cargo transfers.
Upon arrival, each wagon detaches autonomously to its yard block, bypassing manual handling. A central system coordinates AWTs with AGVs for transport and RTGs for stacking, enabling collision-free operations, real-time tracking, and energy optimization.
This pilot addresses logistics challenges like peak-hour bottlenecks and labor shortages, cutting turnaround times, and reducing emissions via smart routing for scalable, sustainable hubs.
